Who is eligible to apply as a 2025 IB World Magnet applicant?

New applicants to the Westlake High IB World Magnet Program must currently be either in the
8th. or 10th grade.   The Westlake IB World Magnet Program does not accept new students who
are either currently in the 9th-11th grades or transfer students from other magnet
programs.  All applicants to the Westlake High School IB World Magnet Program must live within 

the Westlake High School attendance zone .

What is the application process for 2025 IB World Magnet applicants?

The application process for the Westlake Magnet Program includes:

  1. Families complete the IB World Magnet Program application including the name and email of two teachers for teacher recommendation requests

  2. Families submit the student's transcript, fall semester report card, and discipline record for review using the link provided

How are applicants evaluated for 2025 IB World Magnet applicants?

Applicants to the Westlake Magnet Program are evaluated on the following parameters:

  1. Overall grade point average. Students must have an overall average of 80 or better, with no failing grades, missing grades, blank grades, NCs for any core classes, or incompletes/WF listed on the transcript. Additionally, students are expected to earn a minimum 80 in all core classes (math, science, social studies, language arts).

  2. Discipline Record. Students must have minor to no discipline infractions on their record.

  3. Teacher/Advisor Recommendations. Applicants will provide the names and email addresses of two core course educators (one of whom must be one of your student's current core teachers) to complete an electronic recommendation form.

 

All categories will be measured.  Applicants must score a minimum composite score of an 8.00 to be considered for acceptance!

What are the Academic expectations of students once accepted for 2025 applicants?

Students who are interested in applying to the Westlake Magnet Program should be students who are academically motivated and willing to go above and beyond the normal expectations for students. Once accepted into the Westlake Magnet Program, annually students are expected to abide by the prescribed course of study for all core academic courses which includes:

  1. Pass courses while matriculating at Westlake High School, including summer school, online courses, the College and Career Academy Program, Work-Based Learning, and any Dual Enrollment courses.

  2. Maintain an overall numeric grade average of an 80 or above.

  3. Earn a minimum grade of 80 in the highest course offering in all core academic courses (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies) annually.

  4. Each school year (Fall/Spring), take the highest course offering of the four core academic courses (English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.  

  5. Maintain satisfactory attendance.

  6. Remain on track and complete three years of the same CTAE or Fine Arts pathway upon graduation from high school. 

  7. Complete three years of the same Language Acquisition course.  

  8. Junior & Senior Years…transition into the IB DP Magnet Program either:

    1. An IB Course Candidate with a minimum of 2 IB core or language acquisition courses of their choosing and one IB pathway related elective course.   

    2. An IB Diploma Candidate and follow all requirements for the full IB Diploma including

      1. taking 3 Higher Level (HL) and 3 Standard Level (SL) courses both junior and senior years,  a full year of TOK Year 2, and and IB Elective course.

      2. Completing the C.A.S. Project

      3. Completing the Extended Essay

***Students who are unable to fulfill these requirements will be placed on probation and risk removal from the magnet program. ***
